Maintaining Your Window Air Conditioning Unit

The dog days of summer are here and everyone is feeling the heat. If your window air conditioner has not been properly maintained, you may be feeling more heat than you need to, plus you will be needlessly running up your electric bill. With a few easy to follow steps you can give your unit an annual cleaning by yourself. Be sure to unplug your air conditioner, and for best results remove it from the window.

*Remove the inner grill and carefully remove the unit’s air filter. Clean it in warm soapy water and let it completely dry before putting it back in your air conditioner. If it is torn or damaged, replace it with a new one. Now would be a good time to gently vacuum the interior as well to remove any dust.

*Next, clean the air conditioner’s exterior by sweeping it with a brush or with a vacuum cleaner attachment. If your air conditioner seems to be running warm it’s possible that the fins have been bent or closed which reduces the flow of cold air. The fins should look uniform and not bent or dented. If they are not uniform, you may need a fin comb to reopen and straighten them. These are available at most hardware stores.

*Check to see if your unit’s motor needs oiling. Some older air conditioners may require this. Check your owner’s manual for specifics on your model.

*Next you should clean out the drain hole using a small bottle brush.

*Check your owner’s manual for any additional items that need to be checked on your make and model.

If you still aren’t staying cool, your air conditioner may need service work. Contact Daugherty Appliance Sales & Service for parts and service.

New air conditioners are much more efficient and often rebates are available to help offset the cost. Stop in to Daugherty Appliance Sales & Service in our Duluth or Cloquet location to check out the latest models. We will be happy to help you keep your cool.

May 20 Road Construction Updates

Latest and greatest for moving around I-35. You will notice the 40th ave west exit (northbound) changed a little, when you get to stop sign you will not be able to make left onto 40th right there. You will have to go 1 block further to next overpass to get to 40th. Don’t go back onto I-35, just past the on ramp to I-35 you will see the left. Just one more step in your travels. Thank you!!!!!!

I-35 in Duluth

May 20, 2010

The Duluth Mega Project has been in full swing for three weeks. So far delays, even on the weekends, have been minimal.

A major traffic switch will occur on Monday, May 24. Traffic will be placed in single lanes in the northbound lanes of I-35 from Boundary Avenue to about 40th Avenue West in Duluth.

Traffic will continue to be in single lanes north of 40th Avenue West, but will not be switched until the following week.

The traffic switch will result in the following ramp closures:

  • Central Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-35
  • Southbound I-35 off-ramp to Grand Avenue
  • Westbound Hwy 2 (46th Avenue West/Bong Bridge) on-ramp to southbound I-35. Will be detoured to 40th Avenue west on-ramp.
  • Westbound Hwy 2 off-ramp to Proctor

Access to northbound and southbound I-35 will be available at 40th Avenue West, 27th Avenue West and Cody Street.

The posted speed limit is 45 mph through the entire construction zone.

Road Construction Cometh!

Ah, it's Spring in Duluth and the sounds of Spring are in the air. Those sounds are jack hammers, dozers and dump trucks of course.

Over the next 3 years, I-35 will undergo a major upgrade. At times this may make getting to Daugherty Appliance Sales & Service an "adventure".

Please bookmark our blog so you can check for updates as we get them. If you go to the Daugherty Appliance website, you can also sign up for our mailing list to be contacted by e-mail. A third option is to check with the MN DOT website for the latest news. They will have maps and routes posted.

For our customers from South of Duluth, you may stay on Grand Avenue and turn right when you get to 40th. This will avoid all road construction problems.

Here is the information we have so far:

Beginning May 5 (weather permitting)
1. Expect delays and lane closures on I-35, especially from Boundary Avenue to Garfield Avenue

Beginning May 10 Several ramps will be closed including:
1. 27 Avenue West ramp to northbound I-35.
2. Central Avenue ramp to southbound I-35.
3. Hwy 23 ramps.
4. Westbound Hwy 2.

One lane of traffic on I-35 will remain open north & south at all times.

Hopefully this will help you in your travels. We were told 40th Ave West exits will be open so you will still be able to get to us. Just call us before you come out and we will give you the best route.

We hope our great service and low prices will keep you coming back to Daugherty Appliance Sales & Service, even if it takes a few more minutes to reach us!

Get Ready for Spring!

It looks like summer may be coming early this year. Are you ready?

Now would be a good time to inspect and service your dehumidifier. Make sure your tray is cleaned or drain line is open and be sure to clean your filter and intake screen. Check your owner's manual for the servicing procedure for your make and model.

If you don't have a dehumidifier, you might want to consider purchasing on. They will help control moisture in a damp basement (moisture control is critical in fighting illness causing mold) and protect valuable furniture and antiques.

Stop in and see us for service on your existing unit or for purchasing a new one.

Happy Spring everyone!

A young girl with a dream

It's a real honor to tell you about a young girl name Olivia. While most 10 year olds are caught up the things 10 year olds think about, Olivia is making a difference is people's lives.

Olivia, or Livvy as her friends call her, got the idea of helping people while on a trip with her mother and a stop at a laundromat. I'll let her tell you about it in her own words from her website, Livvy's Laundry.
"My name is Olivia,
but people call me Livvy.
I am ten years old. I live with my mom.

She, well, we together are big Oprah fans. We think Oprah is great.
I am inspired by her kindness.

I have always wanted to help out with something or help someone. I have finally found something I want to help with.

Well, just recently I went on a road trip. I had to go to a Laundry mat. I thought it was a little odd because I had not been in one for a while. I couldn't believe that the people did not have a washer and dryer at there houses.

When I was a little girl my mom and I had to go to the Laundry mat. Now I am lucky enuf to have a washer and dryer of my own.

I thought, well, maybe I could help a family?
So this is what I decided to do. I am going too start raising money to buy a washer and dryer for a family that needs it the most.

Would you mind helping me buy more washer and dryers for people who need them? Even a little bit helps.
Livvy"

I think it would be great if you could check out her site and see how you can help her to help others.
